To receive Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you must prove you have a disability that is expected to last for at least a year or result in death. Other factors like your income, the severity of the disability, and your ability to work or change careers play a role.
Having complete medical evidence is the most important part of your claim. Doctor’s notes, lab results, X-rays, and even letters from people close to you will help prove your disability to the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Review the SSA’s Disability Starter Kit to learn about the different disability programs and how claims are decided. Get an outline of the documents and the information you will need to provide. Apply online or visit your local Social Security office for a disability interview.
